Looking for Mr. Goodbar is not an easy movie to get your hands on, and maybe that doesn’t matter, because we watched this hip hygiene film from 1977 so you don’t have to. Part salacious thriller, part reactionary moral panic, part document of the disco era of NYC’s bad old days, Looking for Mr. Goodbar is out of print and out of touch in 2020. Still, it did garner an Oscar nomination, is full of future stars, and is visually compelling in places. Finally, in the shadow of a “law and order” election campaign, the film perhaps offers a glimpse of how some folks see urban space.
